My maternal grandma was born and raised in Hyderabad, India. She migrated to Pakistan among hundreds of thousands of Muslims when both countries won their freedom after World War II. My dad was born in Lahore, Pakistan, while my mom was born in Karachi. My mom came to the United States after marrying my dad, arriving on Christmas Day. They moved to Austin, for my dad’s school, then to Houston where I was born.

Why did your family come to the United States? My mom never expected leave Pakistan but embraced coming to America to be with my father who had emigrated earlier for school.

What would the U.S. be missing out on if you or your people were banned? A journalist, a teacher, and a scientist. Three incredibly proud Americans. A loving and supportive mother and one feisty, fearless grandma. Samosas.
